The Story

As I Lay Dying's rhythm guitar tone on "My Own Grave" was achieved using an Ibanez Universe UV777 seven-string guitar through a Peavey 5150 amplifier. The signal chain included an Ibanez TS808 Tube Screamer as a boost pedal and an ISP Decimator noise gate. The track was recorded at Planet Z Studios with producer Zeuss, using a Shure SM57 microphone to capture the cabinet. The dual-tracked guitars were panned left and right to create the characteristic wide, aggressive sound.

Recreation Tips

  • Start with a guitar that has high-output humbucker pickups for a thick, aggressive tone.
  • Use a Tube Screamer-style overdrive pedal to boost the input of the amp, with the drive set low and the level set high.
  • Carefully EQ the amp to cut out any muddy frequencies and emphasize the midrange.
  • Use a noise gate to eliminate unwanted noise and tighten up the sound.
  • Double-track the guitar parts and pan them wide in the mix for a fuller sound.
