The Story
The "Rhythm Nation" drum sound was crafted by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis at Flyte Tyme Productions Studio in Minneapolis, combining a Yamaha RX5 drum machine with live acoustic drums from a Ludwig kit. Engineer Steve Hodge recorded the acoustic elements using an AKG D12 microphone, then processed everything through SSL EQ and Urei 1176 compression. The final sound featured AMS RMX16 reverb to add depth while maintaining the tight, punchy character that defined the track.
