The Story

This lead guitar tone from "Rape Me" was recorded during Nirvana's In Utero sessions at Pachyderm Studio with producer Steve Albini. Kurt Cobain used his Fender Stratocaster through an Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi fuzz pedal into a Mesa/Boogie Studio .22 Preamp. The aggressive, saturated fuzz character comes from the Big Muff pushing the preamp's clean channel into breakup, creating the raw and abrasive sound that defines the track.

Recreation Tips

  • Start with a Fender Stratocaster into an Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi.
  • Set the Big Muff for a thick, saturated fuzz. Adjust the tone control to taste.
  • Run the Big Muff into the clean channel of a Mesa/Boogie Studio .22 Preamp, setting the gain to just break up.
  • Use a Shure SM57 close to the speaker cone.
  • Consider double-tracking the guitar part to enhance the chaotic feel.
