The Story

John Frusciante recorded "Scar Tissue" using his Fender Stratocaster through a Marshall Major amplifier, with an Ibanez Tube Screamer providing light overdrive and midrange focus. The track was recorded at Sound City in Van Nuys, CA with producer Rick Rubin and engineer Jim Scott during the Californication sessions. The Tube Screamer was used to push the Marshall and add the characteristic midrange punch that defines Frusciante's tone on the album.

Recreation Tips

  • Start with a Fender Stratocaster and dial in a clean tone on a Marshall-style amp.
  • Use a Tube Screamer to add a touch of overdrive and focus the mids. Adjust the drive to taste – not too much is needed.
  • If you don't have a Marshall Major, try a Plexi-style amp and push it with the Tube Screamer.
  • Use an SM57 or similar dynamic mic and position it slightly off-axis from the speaker cone.
