The Story

REO Speedwagon's "Keep on Loving You" features a Yamaha CP-70 electric grand piano processed through a Roland Dimension D chorus unit and compressed with a Urei 1176. The track was recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami with Kevin Beamish producing and engineering. The direct recording approach combined with the Dimension D's spacious chorus effect created the lush, romantic piano sound that became a hallmark of early 80s ballads.

Recreation Tips

  • Start with a bright piano sound, such as a Yamaha CP-70 sample or emulation.
  • Apply a subtle chorus effect like the Roland Dimension D to add width and depth.
  • Use a compressor like the Urei 1176 to reduce the dynamic range and increase sustain. Adjust the threshold and ratio to taste.
  • EQ the piano to emphasize the high frequencies and reduce any muddiness in the low end.
